題目: Programming Models and Runtime System Challenges in Exascale Applications

As we move from the post-petascale era to the Exascale era, every layer of the software/hardware stack is facing unprecedented challenges that need to be addressed. In this talk, I’ll focus on some of the programming models and runtime system challenges that need to be addressed for Exascale. Instead of a typical bottom-up approach to the runtime system where the challenges and solutions are guided by what the hardware architecture provides, in this talk I’ll take a top-down approach by looking at what challenges applications pose as they move to their next generation of simulation capabilities. I’ll discuss applications from three different domains: computational chemistry, bioinformatics and nuclear physics and present their computational trends and the challenges they pose to programming models and runtime systems. Then I’ll briefly discuss some of the solutions we have been working on for these challenges.
