Abstract（要旨）
A number of extremely cold winters have occurred in recent years over central North America, northwestern Europe, and east Asia and have exerted a severe social and economic impact in spite of the long-term global warming trend. The negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) has been suggested as a cause of these anomalous mid-latitude cold winters and a clear understanding of the cause for this negative trend in AO index embedded in the global warming becomes central to the debate. This study reviews possible mechanism of the negative AO in recent decades and focuses on the relation between Arctic amplification (warming) and recent abnormal winter variability.

近年、北極域（特にグリーンランド）の温暖化が進行する一方で、中緯度の多くの地域では毎年のように異常な寒冬に見舞われるようになった。その背後には負に転じた北極振動指数があり、その長期的変動の原因を解明することが地球温暖化研究の最前線的研究として注目されている。本講演では、その原因について考え、北極増幅メカニズム（Arctic Amplification）との関係について最新の研究成果を報告する。
